I have been experimenting with creating art from sand since the 1980s. I started collecting sand of a variety of colours and grain sizes to shape calligraphy. After years the collecting became more organised and through my own travels and those of my friends, my bank of sand now contains all the beauty of sand's colour and variety that the world can offer. I am using different shades of sand to create an impression of light and shadow to the immediate calligraphic gestures.
After a few years working with sand I started experimenting with sand on oil and on paper. The contrast between textures and techniques highlight the floating character of the calligraphic gestures.
The careful execution of calligraphy creates a particular sensivity to shade of meaning, to the interplay between the monements of the hand, the materialand the presence of mind. When I left Japan I searched for a more open and dynamic attitude in my calligraphy, more free, expressive, and rhythmic
